Cancer Research Interest
- Disease Site Focus: Leukemia/ Lymphoma, Pediatric Oncology
- Research Focus Area: Treatment, Diagnosis/ Prognosis
- Type of Research: Clinical, Translational
- Research Keywords: survivorship, cardiometabolic late effects, pediatric leukemia/lymphoma, pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia
- Research Interest Statement: My passion for research has been pervasive throughout my education and translated into action during my training as a pediatric hematology/oncology fellow. During my fellowship (2018-2022), I focused my research efforts on learning the foundations of basic science and translational research at the Arkansas Children’s Research Institute (ACRI). The goal of this project was to investigate the role of DNA-PKcs, a key player in graft rejection, on T cell activation and cytotoxicity examining a potential role in graft versus host disease, a morbid outcome of bone marrow transplant. I received the ACRI/ABI Post-Graduate award for this project in 2020. My contributions to this research project have been presented at local and national conferences and have been published in a peer-reviewed journal. This research project afforded me a strong bench research background and deep understanding of the necessity and nuances of preclinical studies required for translational research and clinical trials involving patients. My keen interest in improving outcomes for survivors of pediatric leukemia and bone marrow transplant has fueled my desire to be involved in clinical research. I have become specifically interested in metabolic and cardiovascular late effects, which are well-known phenomena among survivors of both ALL and bone marrow transplant. My long-term goal is to research and implement preventative care practices to decrease the risk of metabolic and cardiovascular outcomes in survivors of pediatric leukemia and thereby improve their long-term morbidity, mortality, and quality of life.
