Cancer Research Interest
- Disease Site Focus: No Specific Disease Site
- Research Focus Area: Treatment, Carcinogenesis, Diagnosis/ Prognosis, Health Disparities
- Type of Research: Translational, Population Sciences, Clinical
- Research Keywords: Data-mining administrative healthcare databases, Clinical Trials: design, management, and analysis, immunology, gene expression, proteomics, metabolomics, epidemiology
- Research Interest Statement: The following considerations make me unusually well-qualified for membership in the Cancer Institute: I have been practicing biostatistics at UAMS for 23 years. During this time, I have devoted roughly 75% of my time and effort collaborating with investigators at what is now the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. I am the study statistician of record on 36 investigator-initiated clinical trials conducted at UAMS, 5 of which are currently enrolling and 2 of which are still active. I also have developed the statistical analysis plans and sample-size justifications for numerous animal studies conducted by Cancer Institute investigators. I regularly lend both my statistical expertise and my critical-reading and editing skills to the preparation of grant applications by Cancer Institute faculty to external funding agencies. My efforts here have led to me receiving salary support from 45 cancer-related grants awarded by the NIH, the Department of Defense, the Veterans Administration, and the Arkansas Breast Cancer Research Program over the past 23 years. Seven of those cancer-related grants currently provide on-going salary support. As of March 7, 2023, I have co-authored 199 peer-reviewed publications since coming to UAMS. Fully 135 of them are cancer-related. They range in scope from bench to bedside to nationwide, i.e., from the basic sciences to clinical trials to large observational studies that utilize federal-government databases. In two cases where the investigator left UAMS for greener pastures, I have maintained productive collaborations with them. For example, I have co-authored 21 publications thus far with Alessandro Santin, MD, 14 of which were written after he moved to Yale University. I continue to this day to help Dr. Santin prepare grant applications to the National Cancer Institute, which, if funded, would lead to UAMS subcontracts with Yale as the pass-through agency. I also have co-authored 13 publications thus far with Yi-Hong Zhou, PhD, 8 of which were written after she moved to University of California, Irvine. This collaboration has also resulted in several grant applications (with UAMS subcontracts) submitted by Dr. Zhou to the National Cancer Institute. I have a long history of cancer-related service activity that continues to this day. Since 2005, I have been a participating member of what then was called the Gastrointestinal Malignancy Study Group (GIMSG), and now is called the Gastrointestinal Disease-oriented Committee (GI DOC). In 2011, I joined the newly formed Head-and-Neck Disease-oriented Committee (H&N DOC). Both DOCs routinely receive protocols of clinical trials to review and discuss for whether the Cancer Institute should try to open them here. When this happens, I review the protocols for statistical soundness, and verbally tell the DOCs my findings. In 2021, I joined the Protocol Review and Monitoring Committee (PRMC) as one of three statistical reviewers. In that capacity, I review up to 3 protocols a month for statistical soundness, and I write detailed written reviews of their strengths and weaknesses. When taken together, these considerations demonstrate that I have a long and productive record of contribution to the fight against cancer. That is why I am unusually well-qualified for membership in the Cancer Institute.
