Cancer Research Interest
- Disease Site Focus: GI
- Research Focus Area: Treatment, Diagnosis/ Prognosis, Detection
- Type of Research: Translational, Basic
- Research Keywords: Liver Cancer, Liver Transplant, DNA-PK, Cell Based Therapy, Cellular Engineering
- Research Interest Statement: Research efforts are currently focused within three areas. 1. Immunology 2. Cancer Biology 3. Clinical outcomes and trends within hepatobiliary/transplant surgery. The basic science efforts have centered on transplant immunology, cancer immunology, and hepatobiliary cancer. We are interested in a particular enzyme, DNA-PKcs, and the role of that enzyme in peripheral lymphocyte development. Additional basic science projects involve collaborations with Dr. William Lu in the cancer center collaborating on synthetic T-cell biology projects and Dr. James Meek in Interventional radiology on investigating the role of Y90 in local tumor control, reshaping the tumor microenvironment, and liver augmentation prior to resection. My clinical research efforts are mostly done to help foster and develop medical student/resident research interest in all areas of surgery including cancer. To date this has resulted in 6 student presentations at national conferences and 2 student papers. With the low entry barriers, clinical research provides a good opportunity to help develop students that have an interest in academic medicine.
