Cancer Research Interest
- Disease Site Focus: Breast, No Specific Disease Site
- Research Focus Area: Treatment, Diagnosis/ Prognosis
- Type of Research: Basic
- Research Interest Statement: I was the founding chair of the Department of Cardiology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center for 16 years and established the field of Onco-cardiology (cardio-oncology). My laboratory discovered that Topoisomerase 2b (Top2b) is the molecular basis of anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity. This discovery changed the 40 year old paradigm that anthracycline toxicity is due to ROS generation alone and provided new insight for prevention of doxorubicin induced heart failure. I trained leaders in the field and edited the textbook that defined the field of Onco-cardiology.
